Building Health Workforce Leadership in Southern Sudan |

On February 9, the Capacity Project completed the first of three intensive leadership development programs designed to help health managers build the requisite management and leadership skills they will need to bring quality health services to the people of Southern Sudan. The 31 participants represented the national Ministry of Health (MOH), district ministries of health from six regions, Juba Teaching Hospital, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army HIV/AIDS Program and the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF). |

In Uganda and other developing countries, the demand for medical professionals is increasing while the supply is decreasing. Only about half of Uganda’s approved public sector positions for nurses are filled, while HIV and AIDS continue to take a toll on health workers as well as the rest of the population.

Community-Based Caregivers Promote “Know Your Status†Campaign in Lesotho |

On January 20, 35 trainers supported by the Capacity Project completed their assignment to build the capacity of 400 community-based caregivers to play an integral role in the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare’s “Know Your Status†campaign. Lesotho is one of the first countries in Africa to launch such a national initiative to encourage people to find out their HIV status. |

In-Service Training Spurs Use of Long-Term Family Planning Method in Rwanda |

In January, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) had to initiate an emergency procurement in Rwanda for Jadelles due to high demand for the five-year contraceptive implants. The rising use of this long-term family planning method stems from in-service training for health workers conducted by the Capacity Project, the Twubakane Decentralization and Health Program and PSI, partners in the Ministry of Health’s efforts to promote family planning. |

Zanzibar’s population of nearly one million needs better access to quality health care. Preventable, communicable diseases including malaria and tuberculosis are widespread, and health facilities suffer from a crippling shortage of doctors, nurses and supplies.
