Nursing and Midwifery Students in Rwanda Benefit Local Communities Print E-mail

As part of their training rotation, students at the Kabgayi, Rwamagana, Byumba, Nyagatare and Kibungo Nursing and Midwifery Schools in Rwanda conduct outreach programs to identify and address key health issues affecting the communities served by the schools.

From March 2-12, Capacity Project staff accompanied students while they visited primary and secondary schools and conducted home visits to examine how their community practice was progressing. The students found that many children had not received proper vaccinations, many women suffered from gynecological health issues and much of the population lacked health insurance.

They provided vaccinations for the children and addressed many of the women’s immediate health issues; for larger problems, such as the overall lack of health insurance, they documented their concerns and forwarded reports to the community health authorities. The Capacity Project supports these five schools as part of its workforce development efforts in Rwanda.
