Family Planning Integrated into Rwanda’s HIV Services and Curricula Print E-mail

In Rwanda, the Capacity Project is a technical leader in the integration of family planning (FP) and safe motherhood content into national training curricula.

Project staff helped integrate FP into prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services at 25 sites in six districts. From 2005 through April 2007, of the 1,557 women testing positive for HIV at antenatal services at 25 facilities, 87% attended FP sessions and 43% of those voluntarily accepted a modern FP method.

At facilities where the Project also provided in-service FP training during the past year, there has been an increase of up to 71% in the modern FP acceptance rate among HIV-positive women. The Project continues to work with partners to incorporate these effective approaches into national policies, guidelines, protocols and tools to ensure integration of FP into HIV services.
